Taronga Western Plains Zoo
Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a great place to visit for animal lovers. The Dubbo Zoo is also a great place to visit with your kids. It has the largest collection of Australian animals in any zoo.
You’ll even be able to see all sorts of animals including getting up close and personal with koalas! With so much to see and do at Western Plains Zoo, you’ll want to plan your visit well.
The zoo is open every day from nine in morning until five at night. Last entry is at 4:30pm (except Christmas Day). You can buy tickets online or onsite.
Tickets sell-out fast during peak periods like school holidays when there may be up 100 000 visitors over two weeks time period!!! You will need plenty water at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
One of the best things about the zoo is that is has more than 600 acres which means walking around all those exhibits takes some effort – especially if its hot outside!
Getting around Western Plain Zoo
Making your way around the zoo is half the fun. You can drive your car on the Western Plain Zoo’s roads, but there is a lot of walking involved. There are also plenty places to stop and enjoy some food or drink
The zoo has an electric train that takes you around for $15 per person (or free with your ticket). This can be great if it’s hot outside!

Shoyoen Japanese Garden
This incredible Dubbo destination has something that will appeal to everyone.
The gardens are a great place for kids and adults alike. There’s plenty of space in the beautiful surroundings. Kids can run around or just relax on one our many benches while enjoying some peace an quiet time away from it all! The garden also has several different types trees. You’ll see lots of trees like cherry blossom (sakura), maple tree’s(momiji) as well pine needle-covered ground. Perfect when walking through during winter months!!
Dubbo Regional Art Gallery
The Dubbo Regional Art Gallery is also a great place to visit with its fantastic collection of Australian art and Aboriginal artefacts. The gallery has an excellent café, too! You can enjoy some lunch or coffee while exploring this beautiful building that was designed by award-winning architect Harry Seidler in 1968 – it’s definitely worth visiting for architecture lovers as well!!
Old Dubbo Gaol
Step back in time with a visit to the Old Dubbo Gaol. This heritage listed building is now a museum. It’s the perfect place to learn about life in early Australia. You can also visit some of its old cells, which are still intact!
Western Plains Cultural Centre
The Western Plains Cultural Centre is a great place to visit if you want to learn about the Aboriginal history and culture of Dubbo. It has an extensive collection of artworks, artefacts and photographs that are all sourced from this area which will provide you with a unique insight into their lifestyle. The exhibitions change regularly so there’s always something new on show!
It also houses temporary galleries for traveling artists who come in order to showcase their work as well as organise workshops or other related events here too. This makes it one of the most diverse cultural centres in Australia! They’re open every day except Mondays, until late each evening.
Lazy River Estate
This is the perfect place to have a picnic, catch up with friends and family or simply wander around. There’s plenty of space for everyone! Lazy River Estate has lots of things on offer – they even have an in-house restaurant where you can enjoy some great food while sitting outside by the river. Royal Flying Doctors Visitor Experience
The Royal Flying Doctors Service is one of the world’s largest and most experienced air ambulance services. It was founded in 1928 by Reverend John Flynn. Flynn had a vision to provide medical care for those living on Australia’s vast outback
The Royal Flying Doctors Visitor Experience is located at Dubbo Base Hospital. Here you can learn about this amazing organisation that has helped save countless lives since it began!
There are also some great exhibits with interactive displays so kids will love visiting too. They’ll be able see what life would have been like as an RFDS doctor or nurse back when there were no hospitals available across much more remote areas!!
You might even get lucky enough spot one flying overhead while your visit here…it happens quite often actually 🙂
Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine
Looking for something a little different in Dubbo? You should visit the Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine.
The caves are a great place for kids of all ages – they’ll love exploring these amazing limestone caverns with their many stalactites! And if that’s not enough there is also an underground lake which can be explored by boat or kayak (weather permitting).
There’ll even have time explore some old mining relics from when this was one Australia most productive mines back before World War I. Or just take your pick between any number other things like fossicking around on our self-guided bushwalk through native vegetation where we might find opals amongst others treasures!!
Riverside Shopping Centre
The Riverside Shopping Centre is the only centre of its kind in Dubbo, and it’s a great place to spend an afternoon. The mall has some fantastic stores to visit like major fashion brands as well as restaurants for when you need something more substantial than just retail therapy. There are plenty of options for entertainment on offer here too with cinemas, gyms and even amusement centres that will keep kids (and adults) entertained all day long!
Red Earth Estate Winery
No self respecting trip to Dubbo would be complete without a visit to Red Earth Estate. It is the perfect place to wrap up your evening.
Established in 1876, this family-owned enterprise has been producing all manner of wines for over 140 years now from their lovely home on Dubbo’s south side. A visit here will provide you with not only wine tasting but also history lessons about the founding families as well as an insight into how it all works behind the scenes!
They’re open until dusk which means that if you want to enjoy some fantastic food or have dinner before heading back out then they are just what you need. They even run tours so make sure you book ahead if interested!
Dubbo Farmers Market
The Dubbo Farmers Market is a must-see for any visitor to the area. Every Saturday morning (and Wednesday evening) there’s an amazing array of fresh produce on offer including organic and local items that can’t be found in most stores. There are also products such as clothing, flowers, arts and crafts or even plants so if you forgot something at home this might be the place to find it! The market runs from sunrise until midday each day so make sure you get here early enough to soak up all the atmosphere.
Dubbo Heritage Walk
If you’re looking for an interesting way to spend a day get the whole family together and head out on one of the many walking trails in Dubbo. The city is built around its red earth which has helped it earn its nickname ‘The Red City’.
